A little something I made for Stacey

You have to look carefully, but I think you can see the two legs, the outsplayed arms, the carefully placed seashells... : >

Sights of & from Kauai

Kilauea Lighthouse

I would not normally be interested in visiting a lighthouse, but we'd heard that this was a good spot for watching whales, a popular Kauai activity at this time of year. There appeared to be a lot of bird-watchers out as well, the brown boobie seems to be a popular sighting in Kauai (hee-hee ; >) (that's true, by the way, it just made me giggle everytime). Overall, this was just a beautiful place, but that's true of all the places we visited. And there was a very good showing of whales that day! The park-rangers & whale behaviorists there that day were very excited.

Breeching Whale

We watched three whales, a typical grouping, a mama, her baby & her escort. The escort is usually an adolescent female, who needs to learn how to care for her own future baby, & who acts as a 'nanny'. She helps to care for the young baby that is not yet capable of swimming up to the surface for air until it is a few weeks old, & a mama does need to sleep sometime! And she's probably pretty tired, what with feeding a baby that gains 150 pounds a day! Mama's milk is said to have the consistency of cottage cheese (ewww...) AND, the mama doesn't have any food for herself in these waters. She just comes to these warm waters to have her baby, & let it grow, before they go back to their native waters, but not before she loses TENS of THOUSANDS of pounds!!!

Caves of Kauai

Here is Stacey in the entrance to the Maniniholo Dry Cave

...and from inside the dry cave.

Wet cave

I don't know if this is the Waikapalae or the Waikanaloa Wet cave. It was right by the road, & we thought it was the only one, after later looking at the map again, we realized there was another one somewhere nearby that we missed : <

Here we are at dinner, very nice, live music in the background. I had the prime rib, Stacey had the Ono (fish, same kind that he caught when we went deep sea fishing the first time we were here together)... yummy!!!

It was nice after only having pineapple all day, but hey, it comes free with the drinks!!! We did have a lot of fun today, I'll tell you more about it tomorrow, we hava a beach to walk right now!!!
